There are more than 130 universities in New York, most of which are within the State University of New York and the City University of New York systems, two of the largest public university systems in the United States.

There are many alternatives for higher education in New York, ranging from research universities to mid-sized colleges, liberal arts colleges, federal military academies, and specialized institutions across the urban, suburban, and rural areas to meet the needs of the residents.

There are top universities located across cities in New York, such as Buffalo, Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, and Ithaca. As varied as the higher education options are, the range of affordable student housing in NYC varies according to the location and budget of the student.

According to their national rankings, I have prepared a list of some of the best universities in New York.

Top 10 Universities in New York

Columbia University

Columbia University in New York is ranked #2 on the National University rankings. It is a private Ivy League research university, and it is the fifth oldest tertiary institution in the United States of America and the oldest in New York.

It is a super selective school, with an acceptance rate of 7%. Almost all the students enrolled in Columbia University graduate (graduation rate is 95%). Tuition at Columbia costs $63,530 on average, and the undergraduate enrollment as of Fall 2020 was 6,170 students.

Cornell University

Cornell University is located in Ithaca, New York and is ranked #17 in the National University rankings.

The average tuition at Cornell is about $61,000 without financial aid, and undergraduate enrollment in Fall 2020 was 14,743 students.

New York University (NYU)

Ask a high school student what colleges are on their dream list, and you’ll hear NYU mentioned about half the time.

NYU is currently ranked #28 on the National University rankings and is located in New York. Expect to spend about $56,500 in tuition fees yearly. Student intake in NYU as of Fall 2020 was 27,444 students.

University of Rochester

Rochester University is a private research university located in Rochester, New York. It is ranked #34 on the National University rankings. It has an acceptance rate of 35% and a graduation rate of 85%.

You can expect to pay tuition fees of around $59,344 per year. In Fall 2020, its undergraduate enrollment was 6,521 students.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Founded in 1824, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is located in Troy, New York. It was founded to apply the knowledge of science to all areas of life.

Tuition fees at Rensselaer cost about $58,526, and Fall 2020 undergraduate enrollment was at 6,283 students. Rensselaer is ranked #55 on the National University rankings and has additional campuses in Hartford and Connecticut.

Syracuse University

Syracuse University, as the name implies, is located in Syracuse, New York. It is ranked #59 on the National Universities ranking.

Syracuse University is ranked #1 among the 50 Most Beautiful College Campuses and #5 among universities with the Most Admired Architecture Schools.

Tuition costs $57,591 without aid, and Fall 2020 saw undergraduate enrolment at 14,479.

Fordham University

Fordham is located in New York and ranks #68 in the National Universities ranking and is tied with Yeshiva University at #68

Prospective students can expect to pay $55,776 for tuition without financial aid. Financial aid packages are available based on merit. Fall 2020 saw undergraduate enrollment at 9,399, an excellent number for the school.

Yeshiva University

Yeshiva University, located in beautiful New York, is ranked #68 in National Universities, tied with Fordham University. It is a private research university with four undergraduate schools: Yeshiva College, Katz School of Science and Health, Stern College for Women, and Syms School of business, which offer a dual curriculum inspired by the philosophy of Torah Umadda.

The majority of the students that attend Yeshiva University are of the Jewish faith. Tuition at Yeshiva costs $47,500 yearly. Fall 2020 undergraduate enrollment was 2,017.

Binghamton University- SUNY

Binghamton University is a part of the State University of New York system and is located in Binghamton, New York. It is #83 in the National Universities ranking. Reviewers rated it four stars out of five.

Tuition at Binghamton University is pocket friendly, as in-state tuition costs only $10,319 and out-of-state tuition costs $27,909, which is almost half the tuition price of the other universities on this list.

Fall 2020 undergraduate enrollment saw 14,333 students enrolled for that semester.

Stony Brook University – SUNY

Stony Brook University is a part of New York’s State University System and is a public university located in Stony Brook, New York. It is ranked #93 on the National Universities list and is rated five stars by alumni and current students.

Tuition at Stony Brook University for in-state students is $10,410 and for out-of-state students is $28,080. There is a significant difference between the two, but both are more affordable than some of the other universities on the list.

Fall 2020 saw undergraduate enrolment at 18,010, which is a significant number.
