How To Make Your Windows Last Longer

The lifespan of windows depends on how they’re used and their maintenance. However, there are some simple things you can do to make them last longer.

For example, ensuring your window frames and glass are well maintained and free from mould and mildew. Also, lubricating hardware regularly to prevent it from sticking.

Upgrade To Double Glazing

If your windows let in a lot of hot air and cold draughts, you should consider upgrading to double glazing. This will reduce your energy bills and make your home more comfortable. It’s not a job for the amateur renovator, but you can find secondary glazing options that can be fitted to your existing windows.

The longevity of your window is determined by a combination of factors, including proper installation and regular maintenance. Windows that are installed correctly seal well against the elements, keeping them from warping and shifting over time. This also prevents moisture from penetrating the components and causing damage.

Clean Regularly

Dirty windows are not only unsightly, but they also let less warm air into your home. Keeping your windows clean helps to keep energy costs lower as well.

First, wipe down your window frames and sills using a damp washcloth. If you have stubborn build-up on your glass, try a cleaner that contains oxalic acid such as Zud or Bar Keepers Friend. This will help to remove stains that are more stubborn than regular soap and water.

Use a soft microfiber cloth or newspaper to clean the windows and frames, starting at the top corner and working down to the bottom. Work quickly to avoid water spots and streaks.

Keep The Glass Clean

Whether your windows are wood or made from another material, they need to be cleaned regularly. Wood frames are particularly susceptible to moisture damage, including cracks and mildew growth.

Window cleaning is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep your home looking spik-and-span. Regular cleaning will keep your glass, mirrors and windows clean and free of streaks and deposits.

When it comes to getting a perfectly streak-free finish, microfiber cloths and squeegees work best. Paper towels, especially linty ones, can leave behind streaks and residue.

Repair Broken Windows

The sun’s ultraviolet rays, humidity, and heat can cut down on your windows’ lifespan. This is why it’s important to take care of your windows and make sure they are well maintained.

Cracked window glass not only compromises the safety of your family and pets but it also robs your home of its energy efficiency. Double or triple-pane windows have argon gases between the panes that help keep cold air out during the winter and hot air out during summer. If a cracked window is left in place that gas will escape through the crack making your windows less efficient.

A cracked window can also be a breeding ground for spiders and mould. If your windows are broken it’s important to get them repaired as quickly as possible. There are a few different ways to fix your windows depending on what type of crack they have. The most effective way to repair them is with epoxy.
