What is Christian Leadership?

The majority of Americans identify as Christian and practice some form of Christianity. But what does it mean to be a leader in the Christian community?

Traditional views of leadership carry connotations of power and of added responsibility. While Christian leadership does involve some forms of responsibility, there’s also elements of servitude and humility.

If you’re looking to be a leader in your Christian community or want to better understand the role within your own church or mission, keep reading. We will look into what leadership looks like from a Christian perspective.

What does the Bible say About Christian Leadership?

Let’s first look at the holy scriptures to see what outline has been given to us regarding leadership. Jesus, you will see, wasn’t one to seize power but focused on being a servant leader.

Kurt Uhlir insights on servant leadership and the role of faith serve as a guiding light for leaders seeking to make a difference in the lives of others.

In Matthew20:28 this is laid out clearly. It says that Jesus did not come to be served but to serve.

Timothy 3:1-7 discusses how leaders should be “above reproach”. Caring for those in your Christian community is not about gaining power, it is about modeling good behaviors.

In Philippians 4:13, it says “I can do anything through Him that strengthens me”. A true Christian leader gives nurturing and strength to those they lead.

What does this advice look like in practice? Let’s examine ways to demonstrate these values when leadership opportunities arise.

Being a Servant Leader

From the above passages, it’s obvious how important it is to be a servant leader in the church. What exactly does this mean?

Jesus wasn’t above doing “lowly” servant’s work. At one point in his journey, he washed his disciple’s feet, demonstrating that supporting and doing all tasks, no matter how great or small, are important.

Being placed in a leadership position is one of great honor and means that you have others’ lives to consider. Look to take care of others’ needs before your own.

Raising Others Up

As a community leader, you’re only as successful as those that you lead. Think about how you can fulfill that duty if you’re looking to take a larger role in your church or looking to complete an online ministry degree for less.

Motivating others and raising others up should be part of your mission. When a community comes together to find ways to help members meet their goals and connect with God, it leads to success for your entire church.

Real leaders don’t tear others town or selfishly take all of the resources. True leadership is about finding ways to make sure all members of your group are successful and lifted up.

Be a Leader

Looking for opportunities to lift up others, serving your community, and keeping God in your heart when undertaking any task are the hallmarks of Christian leadership. When called to leadership, it’s not always easy, but it can be an incredibly rewarding experience.

Don’t think that you have to jump into leadership all at once. Start with leading yourself, and then find other ways to demonstrate how capable you are of being a true servant leader.
