6 Things That You Need To Do When Your Car Breaks Down

Picture this, your car breaks down somewhere completely new to you after taking a long drive. It’s dark, you’re lost, and it’s starting to get cold. What do you do? This is an article that will help you get out of this situation, in case it ever happens to you, so keep reading to find out some solutions.

1. Call a towing service

If your car breaks down, the first thing that you need to do is call a towing service. This is because it can be dangerous for you if you stay in the vehicle alone with no help nearby. Not only will they tow your car, but they’ll also drive you home, so make sure that you have their number saved on your phone or written down somewhere just in case. Even though it’s normal for someone to feel panicked when their car breaks down, this isn’t going to get them anywhere, so try staying as calm as possible until the service arrives. If you find yourself in Texas, and you are stranded, you can call towing in San Antonio, and they’ll come out to tow your car with no problem. This is maybe the best solution and if you call early enough the towing company will be able to get there very fast.

2. Call a friend or relative to pick you up

In most cases, the towing service will also call someone for you if they can’t pull your car out themselves. If this is not an option, and you don’t have a friend or relative that lives close by, then it’s time to get creative. It would be smart for you to check your phone and see if there are any nearby garages that might be able to fix your car. If not, then ask anyone in the area if they know of anywhere that could help you; even the person who originally towed you here will often personally recommend somebody else who works nearby. There are some other people too like small-scale mechanics who might be able to fix the damage but only do simple repairs like brakes or battery replacements etc.

3. Try to contact the local police department for help

Even if you don’t feel like the police would help, it is a good idea for you to call them even if they can’t send someone out right away. This is because the police will have access to local garages, and it’s very likely that some of them are more trustworthy than others. Also, they can drive you home or give you a ride to the nearest gas station if necessary, so this will help you out quite a bit. If they can’t do anything, then at least they’ll be able to tell you how much longer it’s going to take for someone else to arrive, which is important information to have in case you’re worried about being stranded in the cold for too long. Also, once you call them,  it’s time to turn on your hazards and wait inside your car for them to arrive.

4. Walk towards a populated place only if it’s daylight

If you are stranded somewhere without someone coming to help, then try to walk towards a populated area. This is only recommended if it’s light outside because most people will want to find ways home before it gets dark. If anything, you can stop by the local bar or hotel and ask for help there, since most of them will have an emergency phone that you can use. You could also try to call the police again even if they didn’t pick up last time so that they can send someone out right away this time around. Just remember never to leave your car open. It’s very easy for thieves to steal stuff from cars and if you don’t bring anything with you while walking,

5. Stay calm

The moment your car starts breaking down, many people will feel panicked and think that it’s the end of the world. Even if this is you right now, staying calm is the only thing that will help you out. Not only will this make you feel better overall, but it could also prevent any other problems like a heart attack or stroke while waiting for help to arrive. If you are alone without anyone nearby to keep you company, listening to some music might be helpful before someone gets there to give assistance. This way, your mind won’t wander too much, and you get scared, which is what most people usually do when they’re left alone.

6. Do not move your car if there’s an active traffic light

On some streets, cars will be stopped or move very slowly because of an active traffic light. This is for your safety as well as the safety of other people on the road, which is why you should also not move your car under any circumstances. You may be thinking that it’s okay to do because nobody else will notice, but don’t risk running into someone else who suddenly decides to play with their car stereo or change lanes. Even if you are stuck at a red light, and it’s time to turn left, stay put! It’s better to wait until it turns green before moving your vehicle, in case this happens unexpectedly. If there are no cars around, then feel free to move, but always check your rearview mirror first just in case you didn’t see another person coming up next to you.
