Saki Hanajima is a fictional side character from the manga Fruits Basket. She is often considered in this manga as witch as she possessed powers which were unusual considering the age of young teens in high school. She appeared in the very first episode of the manga making her look like the main character but she was an acquaintance as well as best friend of the protagonist character of this manga Tohru Honda. She is her best friend and they both are seen on the side of good but the powers of Saki were truly mesmerising and that gave instant twists and turns in the roller coaster journey in the manga whether she stays on the right side or not.

Saki Hanajima was born with these powers hence she had no idea how she had those powers. She witnessed the first moments when she used to telecommunicate with her dead parents through inner voices and she never actually missed them even though they were dead. She used her powers for the very first time in the first episode of the manga when one of her boy bullied her to eat Live Newts even though she said no. The boy forced her to eat by shoving them into her mouth. She developed instant hate and wished that the boy never took another breath of air. As soon as she whispered it in her mind, the boy collapsed and eventually died. After that incident she was termed as witch and was considered ill to be talking as rumour spread among the school that she is cursed person.

Saki Hanajima is a young energetic and very charming teenage girl in high school. She had an average build body with typical teenage thin arms and legs. She had beautiful fair skin colour with extraordinarily rare purple coloured eyes in addition to greenish black hair which almost resembled the witch. She was a very short teen who stood 5 ft 3 inches but her powers made her look even more bigger. She was just 16 years during the manga hence, she was very young and didn’t understand her powers. As the manga progressed and with the help of her good will, best friend Tohru Honda, she managed to come over the incident and helped her friends with her powers.
Character Personality
Saki is very polite, quiet and good girl throughout her childhood. Even in the high school, she had very good reputation of being the quiet kid and good girl. But in first few days in the highschool, she killed a boy through her powers of telekinesis which even she didn’t had any idea, gave her the idea of spooky evil witch. She then stayed all alone and didn’t used to have any friends in her high school and had to bear the self regret she had on herself for having such powers.
She changed herself after meeting with Tohru Honda who happened to be her best pal and she opened her secrets of powers. With the goodwill and friendship to the next level, they both managed to control her power and used them in the right way. Saki was a very mature person and even though she faced excessive racism and outkast feelings from her fellow classmates, she didn’t develop hate and made herself into a true witch. She controlled them and made sure she was normal young teenage from simple school.
Character Popularity
Saki had good popularity even though she was not the main character and being the friend of the protagonist surely helped her be in the attention. She had a very dark experience with her powers but she never truly used them in an evil manner, hence she was shown to the audience as a quiet kid who needed help rather than hate.
The character development was majorly about her controlling the powers with her best friend Tohru Honda, hence she had a good following throughout the manga. She was a very beautiful young teenager and with a very calm, soothing personality she had lots of eyes on her which made her have a good following even though she was not that majorly important character in the manga.
